Vienna (day 4) – Stephan’s Cathedral

Where to start with this AMAZING city. The weight of this city can only be seen with your own eyes. Every building is detailed to the finest stonework and architecture you can imagine. Vienna was formed from an empire, hence the structure of all the buildings in the city. 20180617_21102720180617_210214

Gabriel and I arrived to Vienna around noon on Saturday. Planning this trip from the beginning was due to the fact Gabriel had won an award from the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology for young investigators in Psychiatry and would be attending a conference over the weekend. I had known from the start this weekend would have been left to me to explore the city on my own mostly during the day… This is not how it went. With Gabriel heading to his conference around 3pm I went into the city center on the U-Bahn (subway) and was amazed beyond belief.

The Stephan’s Cathedral built in 1365 was the most amazing thing I had seen on this trip by far – it was the most massive catholic church I had ever seen. I only had one request from my grandmother and that was to light a candle for my Papaw. Knowing I was in a place that my grandfather once visited and made his marks on the world, nothing can describe this feeling and warmth it brought to my heart.

After I explored the city center for a while, Gabriel was done with his conference and it was time to eat a nice dinner where we enjoyed a traditional Wiener Schnitzel. Similar to that of a chicken fried steak (just a lot thinner), and you juice it with a little lemon or you can even ask for a cranberry type of jam that goes perfect with it.

Side note: two years ago in Brazil I met Gabriel’s friends Gabi and Gustavo and had the most amazing time with them. Come to find out they have been biking across Europe starting in France and making their way east, and as it turned out they would land in Vienna the same day we were going to be here. I was instantly excited, for one I wasn’t going to be alone but just to catch up and see them completely made our trip that much more special. They joined us for the Schnitzel and hang out with us until our last day here. Together we walked around the city center at night and saw all of those majestic buildings lit up, which was really impressive and beautiful. There are no words to describe it, so here are some more pictures!

  1. Drew, I can’t believe I save this and just now looking at it. I cried when you said you light a candle at Stephan’s Cathedral for Horace. Just knowing Horace and I were there, we both loved Vienna. Rhonda and Bill and Horace and I walk (I think it was called the circle walk) but being able to walk around like you and Gabriel that was wonderful. So happy of you to get to see a hold other world. I love how you put this together, a member of a life time. “nanny love’s you this much”.
