Vienna (Day 5) – Danube Park with leisure

Today I got to sleep in a little later then I would normally, and unfortunately Gabriel was already dressed and gone to his conference for his presentation. I had a great little breakfast at the hotel.

Not having a real plan as to what I was going to do, I decided I would just start walking and see where the day took me. I came across one of the city parks (The Donau Park), which is located across the river from the city, and decided I would take a stroll. Lots of beautiful flowers and families enjoying their Sunday, which made me miss being with my father on fathers’ day. They had a little train I really wanted to ride but it seemed like I would have been the only adult on it if I did. Lots of people playing Frisbee and little birthday parties. Beautiful fountains with lots of ducks and ducklings trotting after their mommas. I sat and had a beer and just took in the fresh air and enjoyed life.

After a few hours of the Park and walking the river, it was time to go meet up with Gabriel in the museum quarters for a late lunch before we headed back to get ready to go to the opera. The museum quarters had a little food truck extravaganza going which was perfect for the timing. Gabriel decided on fish and chips and I opted for a “La Torro” burger, which was great. Spicy BBQ sauce, pickles, lettuce, pepper jack cheese, crumbled spicy tortilla strips, slabs of bacon, and one huge burger patty… it hit the spot for a late lunch. After finishing our food Gabi and Gustavo showed up on their bikes to join us for a cocktail before we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the Opera.

Arriving at the opera in excitement, Gabriel checked us in for our tickets and decided on a glass of wine before the show. The Opera was good but let me just say this: the Opera house was amazing! The details in the architecture and the building itself is something everyone needs to see. {Insert pictures here} When we left the opera house we were surprised to see many rainbow flags waving in the air. We knew it must have been pride week in Vienna – what a great time for us to have come to Austria!

As we walked the streets of Vienna to find the restaurant of choice for the night, we decided on a simple outside dinning spot right by the Stephan’s cathedral. Gabriel decided on pork medallions dressed in a black pepper brown gravy sauce and I chose pork ribs with a tangy rosemary sauce, both meals with a side of potatoes. I regret not taking a picture of the food but at this point we were starving and just forgot (what a horrible blogger I am :-). Our waiter was the sweetest man, and he did everything he could to make our dinner as perfect as possible. From our reads with planning this trip we always heard the people in Vienna have a reputation of being rude and unpleasant, but being here two days has completely changed my mindset of anything the travel blogs have told us. The culture is extremely diverse just like any major city you go to and I love that fact, a space made up of all cultures being as one with love is why traveling is so exciting. We all travel to see the world, and seeing the world is connecting with others and the land our feet walk on.
